Hi Li Years ago visiting Portugal I stayed in a castle that had rooms built like this which also had housed nuns, so the architecture caught my attention immediately because of the Sunlight! It's reflection on the floor caught my eye first which led me through door into the courtyard where the sun's yellow sky took me over that wall. Your shades of yellow are perfect. Because you painted it so I would see beyond captivated me. In the room my eyes are drawn to the shadow of light on the door and then up to the shades of blue in the shadows. Your blues are perfect. I like your mix of colors in the stones. Most of all I love the sunshine. I also like that stone floor. Dorian

The chiaroscuro of your painting caught my eye, Ningning Li. Then the mystery of it took hold: what is this place? Why did the artist choose to paint it? Stuff like that. To me, in a place-specific painting, knowing something about the place painted adds to the appeal. This is just a theory of mine, but I tend to think of art as a sort of jumping-off place to a story. I had a feeling there was a story behind that painting. Thanks for telling it.

Robert, I am happy that you enjoyed it. To answer your question, I have to tell you some more about this door. Peru´s second largest city is called Arequipa which is located in the Andies mountains about 2,300 meters above sea level. In the city there is a convent named Sta. Catalina which was built in late of 16th centery. It was a cloistered convent for the nuns. In 1970s, the Vatican approved that it be opened to the public as a tourist attraction. I had visited it twice. This door was repainted years later but I like the way it was. By Standing there, I felt the past, present and unknown future.

Artist's Description

In this city, there is a convent named Sta. Catlina which was built in late of 16century. It was a cloistered convent for the nuns. In 1970's, the Vatican approved that it be opened to the public as a tourist attraction. I have visited there twice. In this convent I sensed a strong feelings of history through the artifacts and related stories. This door is part of the convent. It was repainted years later but I like the way it was. Standing in the door, I felt the past, the present and the unknown future.

About Ningning Li

Ningning Li

I was born in Beijing, China. Now I am living in Lima, Peru. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution(which lasted from1966-1976), my family was separated and sent to the provinces. My eldest sister was sent to a remote countryside village. She took care of the farmers as a "barefoot doctor". I borrowed medical books and copied the texts and sketched those bones, tissues, muscles and organs and sent them to her pages by pages for her to study. That was my only drawing experience during those years. Art was hence more of a must under the circumstances but by no means a desire. I had my artistic awakening six years ago but it only lasted for one year. I was lured by the Marinera Norteņa, Peru's most famous folkdance, and became drunk for...
